Monkey Socks – Just Monkeying Around With Cookie A Patterns

My absolute favorite craft that I do not do enough of these days is knitting. For years I was turning out 12-14 pairs of socks a year, sweaters (sometimes), blankets (sometimes) and various other little things. Since Little Man came around my knitting time is limited, mainly because he likes to “help” me. Now that he is getting a little older and plays on his own a little more the knitting is starting to come back out more regularly. Most recently it came in the form of my favorite socks, Monkey socks.

I first discovered the Monkey sock pattern way back when I first learned to knit socks. I was slightly terrified of it (there is a reason Cookie A is held on such a high pedestal in knitting) and intrigued at the same time. A lot of knitters I followed talked extensively about them and some knit a few dozen pair. I’ve now knit somewhere around half a dozen pair of Monkey socks. They are my go to sock that I’ve memorized pretty easily.

Monkey socks take colors that wouldn’t normally stripe well on a patterned sock and make them stripe nicely. They have just enough detail to keep you entertained, but not enough detail that it is not impossible to memorize the pattern. The best part is, they fit nice and snug around your feet, but have enough stretch to go on easily.

There is no doubt in my mind, Monkey socks are the best socks to knit. They’ve been around for about 10 years, there are thousands of finished projects on Ravelry & the pattern has been well loved over the years.

  1. So cute! I love how they turned out. It really makes for a great pattern that doesn’t make the stripes look crazy 🙂 I am not a knitter. I started a few years ago, just giving it a shot, and really could only manage long, straight scarves. I gave it up after that. I want to get back into it, but really need to learn how to do more than just rows! Ha ha 🙂

    1. Haha It really isn’t bad once you get into it!!! I started with scarves and eventually got daring! Socks are actually very similar to knitting a scarf you just go in circles instead of rows!

  2. I have a pair of half-finished socks that you inspired me to pick up my needles on again! What a brilliantly fun pattern!

    1. They are so incredibly comfy! Knitting isn’t hard just takes a little bit of patience!

    1. They are great!! it’s a wonderful way to learn a slightly more complicated stitch pattern without getting easily frustrated!
