Thunderstorms and a Warm Cup of Coffee

Coffee and a ThunderstormBack in June the Midwest broke records on rainfall. It was depressing, dreary & impossible to spend anytime outside. Mother Nature didn’t even give us the option of thunder and lightening, it was just rain and way too much of it. We spent a lot of time inside and were pretty much over rain.

By the end of June, we were all enjoying the change in weather and the sunshine that came along with it. As Fall is starting to roll in we have started to see cooler weather, but have also finally had a chance to enjoy some thunderstorms that we missed this summer. As much as I love the sunshine, there is nothing like a good thunderstorm.

About a week and a half ago around Midnight I woke up to the room filling with lightening and the rumble of thunder in the distance. On and off for the next 5 hours I woke up every so often and just enjoyed the sound of the thunderstorm. Unfortunately it was a Friday and it meant I couldn’t enjoy it all day long. We had a busy day filled with lots of coffee after Mother Nature’s music show all night and a drive to Toledo that night.

Thunderstorms always make me want to curl up with a blanket and a good cup of coffee. As much as I wish I could have a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha (or Salted Caramel Mocha) on hand at all times, I am usually pretty happy with a Chocolate Glazed Donut kcup.

This particular Friday was no exception. The rainy weather was perfect for a good cup of coffee. I wasn’t alone as we were all feeling it when we looked outside from our office. After much debate (and the realization that the good kcups were gone at work) I settled on some hot chocolate. The sad part was, it was still 80 degrees outside. I’m not sure why but a hot chocolate felt so perfect with the lightening and sounds of thunder in the background.

Friday night we had a three and a half hour drive through thunderstorms. There was pouring rain, loud thunder and some of the most beautiful lightening I’ve ever seen. It was a good thing there was a Starbucks on the way… a Salted Caramel Mocha was the perfect pick me up to get through the drive.

While it was an incredibly stressful drive, it was one of the most amazing light shows I’ve ever seen. Mother Nature held nothing back. For three and a half hours straight I got to enjoy my coffee, thunderstorm and well a crazy drive with a toddler watching Animal Mechanicals.

Yesterday was one of those days where it was dark and gloomy outside and I finally had a good coffee snuggle on the couch. The sun snuck out a few times but it was the perfect morning for a couch snuggle, a book and Chocolate Glazed Donut kcup. A thunderstorm would’ve made it just a little bit more perfect.

Since today is Monday, the day of the week that requires the most coffee, I’m joining the Bain and a few of my coffee loving bloggers for a coffee linkup. 1. I love thunderstorms! I spent 3 years in Denver so it was awesome to hear one rolling in almost daily — now that I’m back in California it’s definitely a rare occurrence unfortunately. Coffee is a perfect drink for curling up!

    1. That is such a change from all of the time to none of the time!

  2. I am not a fan of thunderstorms! And worst of all, my husband is a lineman for the utilities department so when storms arrive he is always away working – leaving me to grab both my girls and snuggle in my bed 🙂 I think they comfort me more than I comfort them lol. Lovely to join you in this coffee shop link-up!

    1. Okay, I could see that as a valid reason not to love storms! I would hate it if it meant extra work too!

  3. Living in California–can you say DROUGHT??–I’d give almost anything for a good thunderstorm. (When I was in Florida for work and there was a storm, I literally had my nose pressed to the window to look out and watch the storm.) Before California I lived in Portland, which didn’t have thunderstorms but at least had rain. Prior to that I was in Austin, and Texas has Texas-sized storms! Growing up in Michigan, we used to get between the window and the curtains, so it was like being as close to outside as possible, to watch and hear “the boomers and bangers.” I remember thunderstorms as a kid pretty fondly.

    1. That is so awesome to have so many different memories with thunderstorms! I could see how you would want one right now in California!

  4. I live in California too and we almost never have thunderstorms but had more this summer than I’ve seen the past 10 years! Having come from the Midwest I do have an appreciation for late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms and sitting on the (covered) porch enjoying the rain and cool air.

About coffee; I’m not a fan of flavored coffee grounds but that chocolate donut one sounds tempting!

    1. The chocolate donut coffee is amazing!!! I highly recommend it!

  5. Oh! It has definitely been a WET summer for us! I live in NE Florida and I’m not sure about records, but I feel the rain was above average. I do like cleaning the house when it storms but if I can avoid driving in it, I definitely will!

    1. Oh yes, I don’t advise driving in it. That made for a pretty stressful night!
